Who we are
A Ghanaian school, built the way we wished ours had been.
Star Avenue School has been teaching in Accra since 1981. We take children from twelve months old in Creche through to the end of primary, on one campus in East Legon, with the same expectations at every level.
The school is organised around one thing: classes small enough that a teacher can name every child’s reading level. Everything else — the two adults in every early-years room, the half-term reading check, the fees — follows from that.

Class sizes capped at 22 in Lower Primary
Twenty-two pupils in Basic 1–3, twenty-four in Upper Primary, twenty-five in JHS. When a class fills, we open a new stream rather than adding a desk.
The full GES curriculum, taught properly
The Standards-Based Curriculum from KG to Basic 6 and the Common Core Programme for Basic 7–9 — with the practical work, project work and assessment that the syllabus actually asks for.
Nobody leaves Basic 3 unable to read
Daily guided reading in groups of six, a half-term reading check, and free catch-up sessions for any child who falls behind. This is the commitment we are proudest of.
A real ICT lab and science laboratory
One workstation per pupil for Computing from Basic 4, and a working science laboratory where Integrated Science is taught with apparatus rather than diagrams.
Safeguarding you can check
A written child-protection policy, a named safeguarding lead, police-checked staff, a nurse on site every school day, and CCTV at every gate and corridor.

A day at Star Avenue
From the gate at 6:45 to the last bus
Every section keeps the same shape of day, with the demanding subjects in the morning while concentration is at its best.
6:45am
The gate opens
Bus arrivals first, then drop-offs. A duty teacher is at the gate every morning; JHS prefects help the youngest ones out of cars.
7:30am
Assembly or devotion
Monday and Friday the whole school gathers on the field — the national anthem, the school pledge, notices, and one pupil presentation. Other days, class devotion.
7:50am
Lessons begin
Literacy and numeracy come first, while concentration is at its best. Preschool works in small groups; Upper Primary and JHS move to subject teachers.
10:00am
Break
Twenty-five minutes on the field, with a snack from home or the canteen. Staff are on duty at four points, and the youngest have their own play area.
12:30pm
Hot lunch
A cooked Ghanaian lunch prepared in our own kitchen — jollof, waakye, banku and okro stew, rice and stew, and a fruit. Special diets are catered for on request.
1:20pm
Afternoon lessons
The lighter subjects: Ghanaian Language, RME, Creative Arts, Computing and PE. Creche and Nursery are napping until two.
3:00pm
Closing
Preschool and Lower Primary close at three. Buses load from the front gate; parents collecting in person sign at the desk.
3:00 – 4:30pm
Clubs and prep
Tuesdays and Thursdays are club afternoons. Basic 9 has daily BECE revision in Terms 1 and 2. Supervised prep is available every day until 4:30.
