About us

Teaching Accra's children since 1981

How the school is run

One constraint, and what follows from it

Almost everything particular about this school comes from a single decision about class size.

Keep the classes small enough that a teacher can name every child’s reading level. That is the constraint, and it is not a slogan — it decides how the school spends its money.

It is the reason we open a new stream rather than adding a desk, the reason every Preschool and Lower Primary room has two adults in it, and the reason our fees are what they are. It is also the reason we check every child’s reading at half term and write to you if it is behind, rather than letting a report card in December be the first you hear of it.

None of that is unusual in a small school. Holding to it as a school grows is the harder part, and it is the part we should be judged on.

What we are for

Mission and vision

Our mission

To develop the whole child. Through our small class sizes, our tailored learning experience focuses not solely on academics, but on co-curricular activities, creativity and sports which nurture every aspect of a child's development. Through these, we strengthen character, build resilience, nurture talents, promote healthy bodies and cultivate a grounded spirit, while fostering intellectual growth.

Our vision

To raise holistic, well-spoken, kind, respectful and responsible young people, equipped with a love for learning, and prepared to make a positive impact globally, in the years to come.

The crest

Four quarters, one line underneath

The shield carries a book, an abacus, a torch and a pencil. Beneath it runs the school's motto — "Train up a child" — and the year it opened.

  • The book

Reading first. It is the one thing that decides whether the rest of school is possible, and it is where our timetable starts.

  • The abacus

Number sense built by hand before it is built on paper — counted, moved and seen, not only written down.

  • The torch

Faith and character. The first of our four core values, and the reason the school exists in the form it does.

  • The pencil

Making things. Writing, drawing, painting, modelling — the work that gives a child something of their own to show.

What we hold to

Our four core values

Faith, resilience, excellence, and the confidence to use what you have. These are the four things every part of the school is meant to build.

  • Faith

We nurture a strong foundation in Christian values, helping children grow in faith, love, kindness and integrity. We encourage them to live out these values daily.

  • Resilience

We train children to embrace difficulties with courage, encouraging them to try again when they do not succeed at first and to persevere in the face of challenges. We show them how tumbles and fumbles are opportunities to learn and grow.

  • Excellence

We inspire children to always strive for their personal best and to press on until they reach the top. We celebrate their effort, progress and accomplishments while encouraging them to keep challenging themselves to attain higher heights.

  • Confidence & Creativity

We create opportunities for children to discover their unique talents, explore their creativity and find their voices through the arts, music, on stage performances and hands-on experiences.
