About the role
Basic 1 is where reading becomes fluent, and we treat it as the most important year in the school. You would take one class of twenty-two, with a full-time classroom assistant, and run daily guided reading in groups of six.
What you would do
- Teach the Standards-Based Curriculum to one Basic 1 class
- Run daily guided reading in groups of six, keeping a reading record for every child
- Set and mark short daily homework — twenty minutes of reading plus one task
- Deliver the half-term reading check and report the results to parents in writing
- Meet parents twice a term and write termly reports
- Supervise a club on one afternoon a week
What we need
- A Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Basic Education or Early Grade Education
- GES registration and a current teaching licence
- At least two years teaching at Basic 1–3 level
- Confident teaching synthetic phonics
- Willingness to be police-checked and to complete annual child-protection training
Desirable, not essential
- Experience of a structured guided-reading programme
- Ga or Twi to teaching standard
